Each year, Allerton Hill residents celebrate Independence Day at the Point Allerton Association's annual flag-raising, a tradition that dates back seven decades. The flagpole, once a ship's mast from the early 1900s, stands at the site of the former Beacon Social Club on Holbrook Avenue. The club folded during the Great Depression and was shuttered. In 1939, the building was cut in half and transported down the road to Hull Bay where it was reconstituted as the present day Hull Yacht Club.
