In the early stages of the Revolutionary War, General George Washington pondered strategies for defending Boston from the English, including mounting defenses on Allerton Hill (here called "Alderton") to discourage British ships from entering the harbor. The letter was addressed to Joseph Palmer, a member of the provincial committee of safety who subsequently became a brigadier general in the militia and a signer of the US Constitution.
